Australia is home to some of the oceans most biologically diverse and culturally significant marine eco systems. We are known the world over for our pristine beaches, and stunning coral reef fringes.

We are also the sunburnt country, and the highest consumers of sunscreen. It is estimated Aussies purchase a whopping 30 million units of sunscreen annually. While it’s super important that we slip, slop, slap daily, the sunscreen you choose may have a detrimental impact on our coral reef. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
What is reef friendly sunscreen?
Reef friendly sunscreen is a term used to identify sunscreens that do not contain the chemical ingredients oxybenzone and octinoxate (UV blocking chemicals), that have been linked to coral bleaching. It is estimated approximately 4,000 – 6,000 tonnes of sunscreen enter our reef ecosystems across the world annually. In 2018, Hawaii took steps to ban the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate taking a stand to protect their reef ecosystems.
